for his inaugural outing on under the shade, james johnston delivers a deep and heavy house workout with three original belters that all seem to evolve and grow from a slow sauntering groovers into mammoth club rumblers. slow in tempo but huge in delivery all teeter around the lower pace of the house spectrum but as james layers them up all become so crammed with content they bust out at the seems and drive home in splendid fashion. also included is a killer andy ash remix of >there is always time to change< that boosts the tempo and utilizes the underlying disco sample to devastating effect.

hotflush presents a special collaboration between two modern-day techno innovators: paul woolford and psycatron. both maintaining an influential discography on labels such as planet e, intimacy, tresor, and bedrock, they have come together to produce >stolen<, a nine-minute techno excursion. utilising relentless, throbbing percussion that sizzles over growling, acidic synthesis and carefully placed samples, its presented in three distinct versions, introducing filter-swept chords in the dub mix, and an even deeper submersion in the second dub mix that perfectly eclipses the raw temperament of the original.

after a handful of smashing remixes and compilation features on nang records, lusty zanzibar returns to the fold with a cracking solo effort named the >the feeling ep.< title track is a spaced out exercise in immersive square-wave programming, reminiscent of the pre-internet computer gaming age when colours were 8-bit and vivid, and soundtracks were hyper-colour opuses. the complex synth work is underpinned by a driving beat with ethereal vocal wisps and crystalline pads. nice. the first of three remixes for >the feeling< comes from ilya santana, with his >celestial version<, and celestial it is indeed! a picturesque scene is set, the rhythm is wound back and a super laid back vibe allows the vocal line >remember how you are feeling< to sit more purposefully in the mix, alongside the tip-toeing bass line and often euphoric chords. up next comes the max essa dub version, introducing some arp-synth subtleties, replacing the main vocal hook to great effect. to finish we have a mix from fear of theydon who brings a touch of arpeggiated femininity and tasteful woodblock percussion to the table. its a fulfilling yet sultry up-beat journey.

the music coming from this persona is one hundred percent puristic, stripped down, dj tool techno. with a capital t you have seen that right! no nonsense hypnotism as we rarely see it nowadays. three or four sounds per track, each pushed and stretched inside out for maximum result. these tunes are made for dark, strobe lid cellars or underground techno temples such as berghain.
techno is back and this is about as abstract and underground as it gets. we look forward to release more rod records in the future.
